A loan of $775 helped a member to buy more plastic items such as cups and plates that will be sold in her shop.

Jane's Group's story

Jane's group is comprised of 4 hard working women. Jane is 18 years old and lives in the town of Hima, in the Fort Portal region of Uganda. For the past 2 years, Jane has been working hard to manage her small retail shop, which sells plastic materials that are used for plates.

To help expand her business, Jane has requested a loan of 300,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more plastic items such as cups and plates that will be sold in the shop. This will help Jane to generate greater profits and to pay for her medical bills. Jane hopes that in the future she will be able to buy a plot of land and to build a house.

Jane is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides a safe place for young Ugandan women to participate in group activities, and provides a forum for life skills training.
