Olivia's Group's story

Olivia's group is composed of two hardworking women. Olivia is 22 years old and lives in the town of Hima in the Fort Portal region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past two years, Olivia has been working hard to manage her retail shop, in which she sells flour, sugar, soap, and cooking oil.

To help expand her business, Olivia has requested a loan of 700,000 Ugandan Shillings (UGX) from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more commodities like soda, sugar, Splash brand juice, and cooking oil for resale. This will help Olivia to generate greater profits and pay for her medical bills and her child. Olivia hopes that in the future she will be able to build a house. She makes sure that she works hard to see that she educates her child.

Olivia is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities, and a forum for life-skills training.
