Martha Emilia's story

Martha is one of the founding members of the communal bank, Medio Ejido. She lives in the center of the city of Cuenca which they call Santa Ana de los 4 Ríos. It has both colonial and modern architecture and its people still maintain the culture and traditions of their towns. They are friendly, peaceful and they always keep smiling in spite of adversity. Martha is 31 years old. She lives in a common law marriage and they have 4 children who are 14, 12, 9 and 5 years old. Her first two children are studying in high school and her last two children are studying in a little neighborhood school. Her husband is a jeweler. They don't have their own home and because of this they live in a rental unit. She works on the upkeep of her home and in her free time she helps her husband in his workshop where they make all types of jewelry like rings, chains and earrings in gold, silver and bronze, or according to the preference of their client. She will invest her new loan in the purchase of gold and silver for their business. Her goals are to grow their business, to have their own home, and to provide their children with a better future.
