Caroline's story

Caroline is a single mom and the owner of Claytime Ceramics, a small arts studio located near Ocean Beach in San Diego. Claytime Ceramics offers hands-on experiences in ceramics painting, mosaic, pottery and clay modeling. Whether alone, in groups or on a romantic date, Caroline’s customers come from all over San Diego to spend a few hours exploring their creativity.

Originally from Pakistan, Caroline received a degree in Arts and a Masters in Education. She established her business to provide a creative outlet for the community. She organizes a variety of classes for kids and adults, as well as summer camps that combine time on the beach with indoor arts classes. Furthermore, she collaborates with local schools for fundraisers.

Caroline has been running Claytime Ceramics for 10 years and has gone through some difficult periods. After her husband died in 2006, she fought to keep her business going through the recent economic downturn, all while having to take care of two small boys without any other support.

Her $6,000 Kiva loan will allow Caroline to update her website, purchase a new kiln and stock her art supplies, especially for her popular mosaic classes.

Despite her challenges, Caroline has found her passion and is determined to succeed, daily living out her personal motto: "Do what you love and you'll never work a day!"
