A loan of $900 helped a member to buy pagnes [traditional wrap-around cloth].

Gnessouma Group's story

The six members of the Gnessouma group are mainly married women with an average age of 35, and have an average of three children. The majority of them live in monogamous families in Hamdallaye, a popular neighborhood in the city of Sikasso, the third-largest administrative region in Mali. They are on their third loan with the Soro Yiriwaso microfinance institution, and aim to satisfy their customers' requests.

Kadia works selling pagnes [traditional wrap-around cloth] made using traditional wax methods, and is pictured third from right to left. She plans to buy about five lengths of pagne with her loan, which she will resell on a cash basis on site and from home, to a clientele mainly comprised of women. She hopes to make an average monthly profit of 37,500 francs CFA, part of which will be used to repay her loan and the rest will be saved.
