A loan of $250 helped to purchase more coconut leaves and threads.

Mary's story

Mary is a married business lady. She lives in Kilifi and has three children, one of whom attends school.

Mary sells roofing materials commonly referred to as "makuti." These items are preferred for roofing in the Kilifi area and at the coast in general since they insulate houses from the heat mostly experienced at the coast during the daytime. She has been running the business for seven years.

Mary was introduced to Milango by her friends and is applying for a loan of 21,100 Kenya shillings to purchase more coconut leaves and threads to make the makuti. Her main challenges are high inflation, which has reduced the purchasing power of most customers, lack of reliable customers and the fluctuating demand for the roofing materials.

Mary will save the additional income from this loan and use it to provide for her family.
