Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $400 helped to buy more bags of charcoal.

Margaret's story

Margaret lives in Kampala, Uganda. She is married with four children and all her children go to school. She takes care of additional family members (two sisters). She sells charcoal at the market on a retail basis. She also gets additional income from selling secondhand clothes. She has been in this business for the last 1 year. She works seven days a week.

She has requested a loan of Uganda shillings 1,000,000 from MCDT – SACCO to buy bags of charcoal. Her major business challenges are transportation and seasonality. Her goals and aspirations are to buy a truck to help with transportation and also to build rental houses. She lives in her own house and the family has access to electricity and piped water. Her monthly expenses include school fees and food.
