A loan of $1,100 helped to buy chickens and pigs.

Rosario's story

Rosario is an active member of the communal bank Las Caleras. She has been part of this group for 15 years, and she lives in the Las Caleras neighborhood of Cuenca (Ecuador). The city has a very strong culture with lots of traditions, and people there are generally very hardworking and entrepreneurial. The city is surrounded by 4 rivers and its architecture is a mix of colonial and modern styles. Rosario is 72 years old, married, and has 9 children. 8 of them are married and live independently, and her single son works and helps her out financially. Her husband, as a result of a back problem, helps around the house as he can no longer work. They live in their own home. Rosario works making bread, noodles, tamales and coffee, and she sells these products every afternoon from her home. She also raises chickens, sheep, and other livestock, and she sells milk to her neighbors. With this loan she will buy chickens and pigs. Her goal is to have more animals in order to grow this part of her business.
