Talca, Chile / Agriculture

A loan of $1,700 helped to buy fertilizer, liquid biofertilizers, and pepper seeds.

Fabiola's story

Fabila is part of the Communal Bank, “My Dreams,” which is in the city of Talca.

She had been working in agriculture (agricultural activities which lead to the production of food and the reaping of vegetables, fruit, garden produce, and cereal) since she was 15 years old. She says she works especially with lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and peppers. She works from home and her schedule depends on her availability.

She tells us that she gets her goods from seed and agricultural distributors at a low price, based on what she can afford. With the loan she will buy fertilizer, liquid biofertilizers, and pepper seeds.

One of Fabiola’s goals is to grow each day and to see what she earns with her vegetable sales, and in that way she hopes to gain a better quality of life. Fabiola lives with her husband and her two children, who are 13 and 10 years old and who are currently in school. Her professional dream is to become a micro-entrepreneur and her personal dream is to have more resources in her home, since the children are growing and, as they do so, so is the need to give them what’s best and to see that they finish their studies and make sure their homework is completed.

She is very happy and grateful for the opportunity that Fondo Esperanza (“Hope Fund”) has given her, since the loan will allow her to invest in her business. On top of that, she feels comfortable being part of the communal bank, which motivates her to continue participating in the organization. She says that on top of that, the training they give her in the meetings has helped her invest better in her business.

Talca belongs to the Maule region, which is located in the central area of the country. It is the administrative, economic, and cultural hub of the region, being the most important city in the central Chilean valley. In Chile, there is a funny phrase about Talca, the phrase, “Talca, Paris, and London.” Regarding that, some people say that it derives from the original saying in English, “Talca looks like London,” because of the abundant fog that frequently covers the city during the summer season in a similar way to the United Kingdom.
