A loan of $1,250 helped a member to pay school fees for his children.

Laurence M.'s Group's story

Pictured above are primary school teachers in Magburaka, a town in northern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of Kiva.org, to apply for a loan. With the help of this loan, these teachers are going to buy goods or invest in businesses or pay school fees for their children. At the end of each month, they repay the loan, using their monthly salaries. Their school’s bursar is directly responsible for doing the deductions and making the repayments on their behalf. Samuel is the leader of this group of teachers. He is a 48-year-old man. Born in Maraka village near Magburaka town in northern Sierra Leone, Samuel is married to a petty-businesswoman. The couple has five children – two in primary school and three in college. Samuel has been a teacher for 29 years now. He has requested this loan to pay school fees for his children.
