A loan of $400 helped to buy grocery products and sugar cane.

Soe's story

Soe R. is 29-years-old. She runs a popular Khmer business selling sugar cane juice. Sellers typically have a small cart with a crank operated grinder which grinds the juice out of stalks of sugar cane. They then serve the juice often over ice in bags tied at the end with straws stuck in them. Her earnings are rather meager at only one dollar per day.

Her husband’s business has not been very successful either, earning only $1.50 per day as a motor-taxi driver. On these small wages they support three children. She hopes to take out a loan to buy more sugar cane as well as a supply of grocery products she can sell from her cart to attract more business. (Her husband is pictured here as she was unavailable to be photographed.)
