A loan of $1,100 helped a member to buy more clothes for resale.

Joan's Group's story

Joan's group is comprised of five hardworking women. Joan is 23 years old and lives in the town of Mukono, which is in the Mukono region of Uganda. For the past two years, Joan has been working hard to manage her business, which sells clothes.

To help expand her business, Joan has requested a loan of 700,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy more clothes for resale and will help Joan generate greater profits. She will use the savings to look after the family. Joan hopes that in the future she will be able to make larger profits.

Joan is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for training in life-skills.
