A loan of $600 helped a member to acquire more medicine to run a pharmacy better.

Esther's Group's story

Esther's group is comprised of hardworking women. Esther is 22 years old and lives in the town of Lugazi in the Mukono region of Uganda. She is married and has one child. For the past four years, Esther has been working hard to manage her drugstore, which sells medicine. To help expand her business, Esther has requested a loan of 800,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used both to acquire more medicine to run Esther's pharmacy better and to help Esther generate greater profits to sustain her family. Esther hopes that in the future she will be able to expand her drugstore. Esther is a member of BRAC's Empowerment and Livelihood for Adolescents (ELA) program. In addition to microfinance loans, the program provides both a safe place for young Ugandan women to take part in group activities and a forum for life skills training.
