A loan of $3,600 helped a member to buy an A/C unit to cool her work room.

Sakar's Group's story

Sakar is 26 years old and an ambitious young Iraqi woman. She is single and has limited career options. Due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Sakar is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, where she uses her sewing skills to generate income.

She has been working at her small home-based business for 3 years and is constantly looking for ways to improve it. She is now hoping to improve her work area and work conditions by buying and installing an A/C unit. She will use this unit to help keep her work room cooler during hot summer days when the temperature reaches as high as 50°Celsius / 122°Fahrenheit. To be able to make this purchase she took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers group loans for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
