A loan of $875 helped to buy seafood.

María Elena's story

Every fifteen days the communal bank, Bankito La Y, meets at the San Jacinto beach in Sucre Canton. This location is known for its beautiful beaches which are visited by many national and foreign tourists. It offers a diversity of lovely attractions and a rich variety of regional dishes.

This is where María, 41, lives. She is a single mother of a 16-year-old daughter who attends school, and they live alone together. She has been in the communal bank for three loan cycles and likes it because the loans have been very helpful.

María is a very good mother who earns a living by selling seafood in order to provide for her daughter. Every morning she goes down to the beach to wait for the fishermen so she can buy seafood that she later sells to the different merchants who come from other cities. She has been in business for over five years, thanks to which she has been able to raise her daughter by herself.

This loan will be used to buy all kinds of seafood.

Her dream is to give her daughter the best education possible.
