A loan of $900 helped to buy rice, fish, shellfish and other supplies.

Mercedes Annabel's story

At the resort town of San Clemente in Portoviejo, the communal bank "15 de Diciembre" meets every 15 days. This is a place known for its beautiful beaches that are visited by many national and international tourists. The location offers a diversity of beautiful places, and a variety of tasty dishes that are traditional to the region.

Here we meet Mercedes, who is 40 years old. She is married and has 3 children, two of whom are now adults and one who is 10 years old and attends school. Two of her children still live with her. Her husband works as a merchant.

Mercedes has a restaurant in the center of San Clemente where she sells breakfasts, lunches and a la carte dishes. The specialties of the house are seafood dishes. She also offers a daily meal service for which she has a large clientele. She works every day with the help of 2 people to whom she pays a monthly salary. She has had this business for more than 20 years, and it has always gone very well because her customers prefer her business because of the good taste of her food.

She will use this loan to buy rice, fish, shellfish and other supplies to prepare her food. She has been with her communal bank from the start, and she likes it because the group is very reliable and united.

Mercedes' goal is to continue to expand her business and satisfy her customers.
