A loan of $1,325 helped to install more shelving in her store and purchase a freezer and an electrical power inverter.

Mariana's story

A loan of 51,750 pesos allows Mariana to install the shelving her store needs and purchase a freezer and an electrical power inverter, because lack of electrical power is a serious problem in the Dominican Republic.

Mariana started her business sixteen months ago and it has been growing steadily, so the current shelving she has is not enough for the amount of merchandise there is in her business.

Her husband works as a land surveyor's assistant and together they have three children, who are eighteen, fifteen, and thirteen. The oldest will start college next year, so both Mariana and her husband have been saving as much as they can to support him.

Mariana's greatest dream is for her children to study and go to college, because "for us who are poor, the only way out of poverty is education."
