A loan of $600 helped a member to buy a boat and other fishing equipment.

Choern's Group's story

Choern is age 30 and married. She lives in a rural area in the Kror Kor district of Pursat province, Cambodia. She has one son, who is too young for school. Choern has been involved in farming to earn a living for ten years. Her husband supplements the family's income by catching fish. The current businesses earn them about 47,000 KHR per day to meet the family’s needs, and she can manage to save about 20,000 KHR per day. Lack of working capital is the main challenge for their current businesses. Choern’s group consists of four members who live in the same village. This is the first loan for Choern with Kiva’s partner, VisionFund. She is now leading her group to request a loan. Choern, the group leader, will use her portion of the loan to buy a boat and other fishing equipment for her husband’s fishing business. She hopes he will catch more fish to sell, which would improve their standard of living.
