Fighting for a better future? We need your help.

Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

A loan of $150 helped to purchase more coconut leaves and fish.

Salame's story

Salame is a married business lady who lives in Kilifi and is the mother of seven children, all of whom are in school. She sells roofing materials commonly referred to as "makuti." These items are preferred for roofing in the Kilifi area and at the coast in general since they insulate the heat commonly experienced at the coast during the day. Salame has been running the business for 10 years. She also sells potatoes, fruits and firewood.

Salame was introduced to Milango by her friends and is applying for a loan of 10,700 Kenya shillings to purchase more coconut leaves and fish. Her main challenges are high inflation, which has reduced the purchasing power of most customers, and a lack of reliable customers. Salame will save the additional income from this loan and use it to provide for her family.
