A loan of $800 helped to buy stock merchandise for her store.

María Elizabeth's story

The “Los Tres Ángeles” (The Three Angels) communal bank meets every two weeks in Montecristi Canton known for its rich pre-colonial culture and for its crafts that are renown both nationally and internationally; it’s where the famous straw hats come from.

María lives in this place. She’s 22-years-old, married and has a two-year-old son. Her husband is a master in aluminum and glass. She’s attending an institute in the city and also sells groceries at home. She sells all types of products like rice, sugar, oil, detergent, etc. She works every day from 6am until 8pm and sometimes even later. In addition to these products she also sells Avon products (beauty supplies, cosmetics, perfumery and women’s accessories) both in her store and also from place to place in her community. She’s had the store for four years and started it with the first loan she got from the institution.

She will use this loan to better stock her store. She will buy rice, sugar, oil, detergent, canned goods as well as perfumes and other basic staples. She’s been in the communal bank since its beginning and likes it because of the help she always gets from the loans. Her goal is to have a house of her own someday because she’s currently a renter.
