Blanca Elena's story

Blanca is a very cheerful, active member of the “Futuro para un Bienestar” (Future for Wellbeing) communal bank. She lives in the city of Cuenca’s Totoracocha sector. This city has been a Cultural Heritage of Humanity since December, 1999. It’s architecture is a mixture of colonial and modern; its residents are very warmhearted and they preserve the culture and traditions of their peoples. Blanca is 47-years-old, separated from her husband but while married had three children who are 27, 25 and 19 years of age. Her three children are married and live independently. she does not own a house; she a renter. Blanca has been a merchant for 35 years. She sells a great variety of spices like clove, star anise, cinnamon, etc. from place to place throughout the city; she works Monday through Saturday with no fixed schedule. She’s in her seventh loan with the communal bank and will use it to buy cinnamon, star anise, clove and other spices to continue with her activity. Her goal is to enlarge the business and to have a locale of her own in which to sell her products.
