Mahalaxmi Self Help Group's story

The Mahalaxmi Self Help Group is a group of 14 women all living in the city of Balugaon, Odisha, India. Balogaon being only 1 km away from Chilika Lake, villagers rely heavily on the lake for fishing and other seafood related industries.

Standing in the middle in a red and yellow sari with her hand on her hip, Jhunu is the president of the group. Jhunu lives with her fisherman husband. Jhunu and her self help group members request a loan of Rs 210,000 to purchase fishing nets, iceboxes for fish storage, and preservatives to keep the fish fresh. The women also prepare dried fish along with fresh fish to sell in the local markets.
