A loan of $3,600 helped a member to buy a sewing machine and also an A/C unit.

Srwa's Group's story

Srwa is a 26 year old, young, married Iraqi woman. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Srwa is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family. She has 3 years experience working in her home based sewing and tailoring business. She would like to offer her customers a greater variety of services and better solutions to their needs. She would like to buy a sewing machine and also an A/C unit. To be able to pay for these purchases she is taking a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq. Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
