Rwnak's Group's story

Rwnak is a 55-year-old Iraqi woman. She is married and a mother of four children. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Rwnak is one of the many Iraqi woman who works from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and assist in meeting the financial needs of her family.

Rwnak has 24 years experience with her sewing and tailoring business which she has been working on improving for the past few years. She took a loan in the past, which she used to have her sewing machine repaired and to purchase a chair with a table and a cabinet for her work area. Having successfully repaid the previous loan, she has now taken a new loan to make further improvements. This time she would like to focus more on her work area and renew her work space. She will use the loan to pay for the renovation works which will allow her to work under better conditions.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers "Group loans" for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.
