A loan of $625 helped purchase a biodigester to make his own fertilizer for farming.

Pedro's story

Pedro and his family are struggling maize farmers in the high plains of Tlaxcala, Mexico. They do not have irrigation and only plant when the rains permit. The high cost of agrochemical fertilizer has forced them to limit how much they can farm. With a new six cubic meter Sistema Biobolsa biodigester, they will no longer have to worry about ever-increasing fertilizer costs, as they will be able to produce their own organic fertilizer using the waste from their sheep. Additionally, Pedro’s family plans to use their new source of renewable energy to cook and heat bathwater. This Kiva loan represents 49% of the total cost of his system.
