A loan of $3,600 helped a member to improve and expand his work station and be able to take on larger projects.

Barzan's Group's story

Barzan is a 31-year-old, hardworking, young Iraqi man. He is married and by profession he is an electrician.

He has a work station set-up at his home, and for the past three years he has been working at construction sites of new buildings as well as improving older homes. In the past he took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq to purchase good quality tools and raw materials for his work. Having successfully repaid the previous loan, he now took a new loan to improve and expand his work station and be able to take on larger projects.

Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers group loans for clients unable to provide a guarantor - thereby unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of three to five clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group.

Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
