A loan of $600 helped to buy beer and a cooler to store it.

Eduvigues's story

Eduvigues, a 39-year-old woman, works in the sale of beer and ice in her coastal community, the neighborhood of La Playa which is in the outskirts of Barranquilla. La Playa is a tourism sector because it is on the shore of La Ciénaga de Mallorquín, a coastal lagoon, where many people come on weekends to bathe, eat, fish, and drink. Therefore, Eduvigues took advantage of this opportunity and started a business selling beer. Before, she had a permanent place to sell lunch and beer, but the owners of her store evicted her because they wanted to use the place themselves. She continued to sell beer and ice from her home, not only to tourists and visitors but also to some neighbors. She has 15 years of experience in this business, working every weekend from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Now, Eduvigues is applying for a loan from Kiva, her first loan with the Fundación Mario Santo Domingo. She is going to invest the loan in buying beer, because now she has to buy from intermediaries and the product becomes more expensive. She wants to be able to buy direct in larger quantities to lower her expenses. Also, she wants to buy a cooler to store the beer. She hopes that this loan will help her to increase her revenue and products in the store; she has two sons who are 13 and 14 years of age and one 12-year-old daughter, and she wants to make more money so that they can continue with their studies. Eduvigues and her husband, due to lack of resources, were not able to study, and they want their children to have more opportunities by having a high-quality education.
