Living in a rural village located in the Kandal province’s Kandal Stoeng district, Socheata is 28 and married with four children, all of whom are dependent on her and still in school. For the last five years, she has been farming rice as her primary business, while her husband is a soldier. The current business earns her about US$10 per day to make a living and she can save about US$5 each day for future needs.

This is the first loan for Socheata with Kiva’s partner, VisionFund. Now requesting a loan of US$1,000, she is going to use it to buy house construction materials such as sand, wood, brick etc. With this loan, she hopes to finish her house completely for living in.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
