Ukweli Group's story

Lopembe is a member of the loan group "Ukweli." She is a courageous woman, an entrepreneur, and the mother of eight children. She is approximately 32 years of age, and is a merchant of various goods. She also sells beignets and bottled drinks (such as Primus and Fanta) from her home to earn supplementary income. Her husband is an ironmonger. Lopembe began her business in 2003 with start up capital she received from her husband. The benefits of her business include building up her savings, and providing food and schooling for their children. She recently completed her 15th loan cycle with Hekima.

Lopembe works in a very difficult location, due to lack of security in the city. With her most recent loan, she plans to purchase supplies, including five cases of Primus, three cases of Fanta, and one parcel of used clothing, among other things. In addition, Lopembe hopes to earn enough income to buy a plot of land in the future.

Lopembe is very thankful to Hekima for their aid in the empowerment of poor women with low incomes. The group would like to note that one of their members is currently expecting a child.
