A loan of $200 helped gertrude is looking for a loan to purchase more haberdashery for her craft business.

Gertrude's story

Gertrude is a 47 year old widow who makes handicrafts (mostly bags and tablecloths) which she sells at a stall in her village. Just over one year ago, Gertrude started sewing alterations to ladies' dresses. She purchases linings and trimmings to decorate gomesi - the traditional dress worn by most older Ugandan women. This is taking over from the handicrafts as her main source of income, as there are so many ready-made items available for much cheaper than she can afford to make by hand.

Gertrude has been borrowing with this group for two years and she says the group has been 'like a mother to her' as she had lost all hope after her husband died, but here she receives support from the other women in the group.

Gertrude has ten children, four in school and six already working. She also has three grandchildren who are supported by their parents.
