Melba's story

Melba, 58, is a single mother; she has four married children. She lives in a suburban neighborhood in San Pedro Sula. Melba has spent her entire life working to support her family. She’s been working for 20 years making home-baked bread to sell: semitas [rolls], quesadilla con queso [cheese-filled rolls], rosquillas [ring-shaped, crunchy cookies] and tostacas [wafer of the rosquilla dough with a circle of pure sugar cane spread or sprinkled on top before it is finished baking].

She makes her goods very early in an earthen oven and her customers are from her same neighborhood. She’s been an ODEF client for several loans already and is currently requesting one for 7,000 Lempiras to buy ingredients like flour, yeast, eggs, sugar, shortening, milk, cheese, etc. for her bakery.

The loans help her pay cash to her suppliers for her ingredients and to buy at wholesale thus obtaining higher profits. Her dream is to stay in business until she has enough saved up for her old-age.
