A loan of $1,375 helped a member to buy fertilizer for his rice and cassava cultivated land.

Sern's Group's story

A citizen from a rural area of the Ponhea Krek district of Battambang province, Sern, 26, is a married father of one dependent daughter who is still too young for school. Farming rice and growing cassava on a 1.5-hectare area of farmland are the main source of the family’s income, a business which he has been in for two years. To supplement the income, he also works for others in the local area for a fee. His daily income is approximately 20,000 KHR and he manages to save about 10,000 KHR each day after deducting daily expenses. The scarcity of working capital is the main challenge for his rice-paddy.

Sern has been with VisionFund for two loan cycles while the other member has been with VisionFund for three cycles. The past loans, which were fully paid back, have relieved his family’s burden and improved their livelihood. Now he and his group member are applying for a new loan of 1,500,000 KHR and 4,000,000 KHR respectively. As the leader, Sern will use his portion to buy fertilizer for his rice and cassava cultivated land and use a portion of it to spend on labor costs. He hopes this loan will enable his crop yield to become more profitable so as to sell it for a good price and fulfill his dream to expand his plantation business.
