Luis German's story

Luis, 47, completed secondary school. He’s married to María and they have three children. They live together in Jordán Parish in Otavalo Canton in Imbabura Province. Otavalo is a city that’s very attractive because of its diverse culture; it’s very well-known by both national and foreign tourists who visit different vistas, colorful festivals and the culture of its indigenous and mestizo peoples that come from legendary histories and who have defended their territory since time immemorial.

It is an economically rich canton because it’s been a center of craftsmanship since its most ancient origins and its products are today highly prized worldwide. Tourism is another industry that contributes to this city’s economy because in this rural zone can be found rivers, lakes, waterfalls and forests that are highly visited. Because of the high number of tourists, merchants and residents in the city, one can find downtown a great variety of businesses that have as their main goal to offer all services to those passing through the city. These businesses range from hotels to inns, restaurants to cafeterias, bookstores, clothing stores, computer rentals, Internet access, etc.

Luis provides telephone rental services for national and international land lines and mobile phones by means of phone booths located in his locale that he started on his own initiative and has now been in operation 13 years; he’s open 8 hours daily. In addition to the phone services, he also sells paper goods and photocopies which are added values his customers can feel satisfied with for obtaining a complete service.

As fruit of his long years of labor, Luis acquired a house that currently needs some structural improvements which is why he’s requested a loan from Fundación Alternativa so that he can reach this goal. He will also get advice and training from them that he will be able to put into practice in his micro business in order to stand out from the competition which has currently grown in the sector.
