Leyda De Jesus's story

Leyda de Jesús, 39, is married with 2 young children aged 9 and 11. Coming from the department of León, Leyda is a woman who has fought hard early on in life to get ahead with her children.

Her economic activity is making and selling tortillas, an activity which she has been performing for 9 years. She started it through the need to contribute to the household expenditure as they had one more child and the load was too great for her husband. Her work routine is to wake up every day to prepare the corn at 4:00 am in order to go out to sell the tortillas once she has finished making them, returning home around 5:00 pm.

She needs the finance to invest in working capital to buy corn, firewood, hot plates to make the tortillas, lime, gas, matches and plastic bags. Leyda de Jesús is thankful for the help which the Kiva investors give people with scarce resources and poor countries such as Nicaragua to have a dignified manner of working.
