In this Group: Maletala, Mariana, Uini, Malae, Koreti, Toeleiu, Matagimalie, Sou, Leafaitulagi
Lotosoa Saleimoa Centre - Group 2 is the second group of women from Lotosoa Village, located on the Northwest corner of Upolu Island in Samoa, to ever receive the maximum initial loan of about US$300 each from SPBD. According to policies and guidelines of SPBD, this first loan will have to be used to either start or improve businesses. During the second loan cycle, the women will have the chance to improve their homes and pay their children’s education fees. Prior to receiving their first loan, all of them were trained by loan officers from SPBD in starting a business and in budgeting income and expenses.

The businesses (and the relevant purchases) of this particular group of women include: taro plantations (weed killers, pesticides, chemicals, wheel barrow, shovel), retail shops (hygiene products), pancake sales (sugar, flour, oven), BBQ (soy sauce, mutton flaps), fishing (boat, spear, boots) and ice cake sales (sugar, plastic bags).

About SPBD

South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) improves conditions for families living in poverty by providing accessible credit, training, and guidance to help them start, grow and maintain micro-businesses, build assets, finance home improvements, and afford to educate their children. 99% of SPBD’s loans go to women, who can borrow in groups to guarantee one another rather than put up collateral.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
