A loan of $1,450 helped to pay for hybrid corn seeds, agrochemicals, wire, and labor.

Paulo's story

Paulo is 36 years old and lives with his wife. They have a 14 year-old daughter who is dependent on them, though she is studying at a high school in the city of Monteagudo because there was no way for her to continue her education in their community. She lives alone in her grandparents' house, which they have through an anticrético arrangement. Her parents live in the community of El Puente, which is located some 140 kilometers from the city of Monteagudo. Paulo's principal activity is agriculture, although these days it is very risky because he doesn't always recover his production costs due to climatic factors that can hurt the growing cycle and affect yields. For this reason, he also raises and sells cattle to earn extra income and cover his expenses. He will use this loan to buy hybrid corn seeds, agrochemicals, and wire for enclosing his pastures, and eventually to pay for labor because he does not have sufficient resources to be able to ready his land and complete the planting.
