A loan of $650 helped to purchase inventory for his business selling clothing, shoes, cosmetics, and other things.

Efrain's story

Efrain is 67 years old. He lives in Chichigalpa city, which is in the western part of Nicaragua, known for its sugarcane production. It is one of the hottest regions in Nicaragua.

Efrain has a business in diversified clothing, shoes, cosmetics, as well as other things. The funds provided by CEPRODEL and Kiva were used to increase the inventory of the business.

Currently, the business is being managed by his daughter because Efrain is suffering from an illness. Due to his medical state, his daughter is leading the family business. Before his daughter took over, Efrain and his wife were managing the business. The disease requires his wife has to take care of and support Efrain in his declining state. They believe the cause of his illness to be his 16 years of labor operating heavy machinery, (old excavators and power shovels). The machinery is used to create waterways, dikes, terraces, among other things in order to bring water to the sugar plantation.

Efrain is married, had 6 children, 5 of which are still alive today. One son passed away in a work-related accident while working in the fields 2 years ago. Both he and his wife look after their daughter-in-law and grandchild's well-being.

Efrain has worked for about 3 consecutive years with CEPRODEL, and this is his first loan from Kiva. He says that the funds he received increased the sales in his business and consequently his family's income, offering them an improved quality of life.
