A loan of $700 helped a member to buy seeds, fertilizer and pesticides for her corn plantation.

Mert's Group's story

Mert is aged 54 and married with four children. Two of her children are dependent on her and help with the family’s business. Mert resides in a rural area of the Ratanak Mondul district of Battambang province in Cambodia and makes a living by growing corn on a three-hectare area of farmland. Having been in this business for eight years, she is able to earn about 20,000 KHR per day and save about 10,000 KHR each day after offsetting daily expenses. Drought is the main challenge for her corn business.

Mert has been with VisionFund for one cycle and completely paid back the past loan. The other group members are first-cycle clients with VisionFund. Mert's first loan has helped her to relieve her family’s burden and improve their livelihood. She is now leading her group of three to ask for a loan. Mert will use her portion to buy seeds, fertilizer and pesticides for her corn plantation and also use a portion of it to spend on labor costs. She hopes this loan will enable her crop yield to become more profitable so she can sell it for a good price and also fulfill her dream to expand her current business.
