A loan of $1,200 helped to buy necklaces, shorts, lip balm, and firewood for building bricks.

Stephen's story

Stephen is 39 years old and lives in the town of Mbarara, Uganda. He is married and has four children, who are all currently in school. For the past 10 years, Stephen has been working hard to manage his small business, which sells household goods and clothes.

To help expand his business, Stephen has requested a loan of 3,000,000 Ugandan Shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to buy necklaces, shorts, lip balm, and firewood for building bricks. It will help Stephen to generate greater profits and improve his family's standard of living. Stephen hopes that in the future, he will be able to open a wholesale shop.

Stephen is a member of BRAC's Small Enterprise Program (SEP). The program primarily serves small entrepreneurs like Stephen who do not have enough collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown too large for microloans.
