A loan of $825 helped to pay the application expenses for a Master's program in Script Writing and Film Direction.

Mónica's story

Mónica, age 23, was born in Cali, Colombia. In order to be able to pay for her university expenses she worked selling music CDs. After that she worked as a photography, video, and writing instructor. Her mother is a housewife. Her father is retired from the Valle del Cauca government, where he worked as a security guard for 13 years.

Mónica’s dream is to get a Master’s degree in Script Writing and Film Direction. In order to do that she needs to request Kiva’s support. This is the only way to cover the expenses of the TOEFL exam and the applications to the universities.

Here is her story:

Ever since I was a young girl I have been very energetic and curious. At least that is what my father says when asked about me. When I graduated from school, I only wanted one thing, to continue studying at the university. I wanted to attend the Universidad del Valle, the only public university in the city. That is what I put my mind to doing. I enrolled in Social Communication. I dreamed about this university, and it was the only educational opportunity that I had. My family did not have the financial resources to pay for a private university.

One of the happiest days of my life was when my name appeared on the list of those admitted to the university. From that day on I have not stopped dreaming and striving to make my dreams come true.

I now have a new dream. I wish to study abroad. I am interested in audiovisual productions and social work through art. I know that studying abroad will strengthen my skills. I will be able to return to Colombia with stronger tools in order to contribute to the film industry in my country. Thus, I will be helping to educate audiences and new filmmakers. I will help make images more democratic through cinema-based social work.

The first step to achieving my dream has been to belong to the “Semillero de Talentos” [“Seedbed” of Talent] of Colfuturo in conjunction with Proimágenes. They gave me a scholarship to further my studies in a second language, English. Now, in this new phase, where I direct all of my efforts to achieve what I have proposed, Kiva’s support is fundamental in order to continue building this dream.

When I return to my country after my Master’s, I want to continue working hard to show the world that there is talent in my country, and they can do things well.

That is exactly where my short and long term goals are targeted, to do business to support the strengthening of Colombian films. My goal is to tell our stories, these rich and diverse stories that are found in every corner of our beautiful country. From that point, I want to attract visibility to our valuable, necessary, and differing perspectives and to our day-to-day resistances, which are full of hope.
