A loan of $575 helped a member to buy fertilizer for her farmland.

Chhean's Group's story

Chhean lives in a rural area in the Sampov Meas district of Pursat province, Cambodia. She is a 60-year-old widowed mother of one child. She has farmed rice on three-hectares of farmland for 30 years. Having been in this business for 30 years, she is able to earn around 40,000 KHR per day and manages to save about 30,000 KHR each day after offsetting daily expenses. Drought is the main challenge for her paddy-field business.

Chhean’s group consists of three members who live in the same village. This is the fifth loan for her and one of her co-members with Kiva's partner VisionFund and the third loan for a remaining fellow group member. She completely paid back the past loans, which have helped her to increase the income from her current business. Now she is leading her group to request a loan. Chhean, who is the leader, will use her portion to buy fertilizer for her farmland. She hopes this loan will enable her to grow her rice more fruitfully and sell it for a high price so she can save some money to build a decent kitchen.
