A loan of $700 helped to buy crafts.

Mercedes Violeta's story

The “La Pila” (The Water Basin) communal bank meets in La Pila in Montecristi Canton. This place is very well-known in the province and in the country for being a place rich in tradition. A great variety of crafts that are made by the inhabitants following traditional customs can be found here. Mercedes, 51, is married and has four children who are all adults now; all still live with her with their respective families. Her husband is a driver. She sells decorations and ceramics. She has a locale at home where she sells all types of crafts every day from 8am until 5pm. What she sells most are table center pieces and home decorations. She’s been doing this for 11 years and has done very well. She buys her products semi-finished from local artisans and then she paints them and gives them the final touches so that they’ll be ready to be put on sale. This loan is to buy all types and styles of crafts to stock her business. She’s been in the communal bank for five years and likes it because the loans have made it possible for her to gradually enlarge and better-stock her store. Her dream is to continue growing with her business.
