Mercedes is married and has four children. She lives in her own home, occupying three small rooms with brick walls and earth floor. The house is located in the Tembladerani area of the city of La Paz.

Currently, she sells fast food in the evenings and until late at night, as she must cover her family's expenses for food, education and payment of basic services.

She also has income from the sale of gold jewelry, which she does during the day as a street vendor, in order to add to her income.

She needs the loan for the purchase of more jewelry for subsequent sale, as this is one of the incomes she has for supporting her family.

Mercedes' dream is to increase her income and to be able to do work on her house, in order to provide more comfort for her family and improve their quality of life.

It is the second time she has applied for a loan with IMPRO, and the first time with Kiva.

Additional Information

IMPRO is a small non-profit organization that has been offering micro credit to the working poor in the Bolivian cities of La Paz and El Alto since 1995. IMPRO’s goal is to fight poverty by offering loans to small business owners who cannot access credit through the regular banking system due to a lack of guarantees or collateral.

To ensure that everyone has access to credit, IMPRO maintains a low interest rate by minimizing operational costs. IMPRO’s partnership with Kiva, which began in 2007, has allowed IMPRO to expand its services while maintaining these low interest rates.
