Jose Abad
José has been working for 12 years selling personal use items in the street ever since he stopped working in agriculture for reasons beyond his control. Because his parents worked in agriculture he learned it from a very young age and for a time was the activity he carried out to earn household income but due to the outbreaks of violence he was forced to leave the land he lived on and look for new economic opportunities in the city. This is how he started the business he’s now had for 12 years and thanks to which his family can have the income needed to subsist. Thanks to increasing sales, José is looking for a loan to buy personal use items his customers are looking for in order to increase his income.

In this way he’ll gradually overcome the great difficulties he has with capital and also adversities like rain, vehicular traffic and other adversities that keep him from selling more in his business. His dream is to set up inside a locale where he can generate income for his nephews who are very poor and don’t have money to pay for their schooling.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
