Lucy is a resident of Murang’a in Central Kenya where she lives with her family of two children. She has been in the farming business for three years and currently produces milk and tea for the local market, which helps her meet her family's basic needs.
Lucy has requested a loan of 50,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to buy a chuff cutter. This will help ease the feeding of her dairy cow and save her more time to run other family errands. Lucy is optimistic that her dairy cows will improve their milk capacity with better feeding. She will use a larger portion of her income to educate her children. Lucy says the challenge remains rampant fluctuation in milk prices.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
