A loan of $1,500 helped to buy rice, pig intestines and other supplies.

María Elza's story

Every two weeks, the members of the Desarrollo Femenino community bank meet in the parish of Calderón, in the city of Portoviejo. This city is known for its delicious cuisine and its vegetation. Most of the local people work in farming and general commerce.

This is where María lives. María is 71 years old and the single mother of seven children who are all adults. One of them still lives with her at home.

María is a very tenacious woman who prepares and sells sausages in order to provide for herself. She has a restaurant in her house where she sells delicious food such as sausage stew, roasted yellow plantain and barbecued sausages. These dishes are very much appreciated by her customers. María has been in this business for more than 25 years and it has allowed her to make progress and gain a lot of customers who know just how delicious her dishes are. She works every day with the help of her son.

María will use this loan to buy rice, pig intestines and various supplies that she needs for preparing her food. She has been a member of her community bank from the beginning and she enjoys being a member because it has helped her a lot over the years. Her dreams are to make progress in her business and to enjoy good health.
