Chhel is a married woman who lives in the Baray district of Kompong Tom province in Cambodia. She is 50 years old and has six grown-up children. She is a diligent farmer who puts in long days working at her rice field, especially during the rainy season. With the time she has left, Chhel weaves bamboo baskets and containers to sell for additional income. She has been engaged in these two businesses for nearly 10 years, and works continually harder to someday earn a better living standard. Her husband helps her with the farming, and also devotes himself to the construction industry, in which he is skilled in building wooden houses rather than brick ones.

Chhel is requesting this loan because she wants to purchase a jigsaw and other construction supplies for her husband, who is currently building a house for a local villager. She believes that this purchase will allow her husband to perform his work more effectively. She’s very grateful for the loan granted because it will be a great help for her and her husband.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
