A loan of $5,400 helped a member to buy a better quality sewing machine, an embroidery machine and some small furniture items for her work area.

Heshw's Group's story

Heshw is a young Iraqi woman with great ambitions at the age of 18. She is living with her family. With limited career options due to cultural restrictions and domestic constraints, Heshw is one of the many Iraqi woman who is working from home, using her sewing skills to generate some income and participate in meeting the financial needs of her family. She started working a year ago and would like to make the little business more efficient, and be able to put her skills to use in more creative ways and offer a greater variety of choices for her customers. She would like to buy a better quality sewing machine, an embroidery machine and some small furniture items for her work area. To be able to make these purchases she took a loan from Relief International - Microfinance Iraq. Relief International - Microfinance Iraq offers group loans for clients who are unable to provide a guarantor, and therefore unable to apply for a loan as an individual. As a group, the members collectively guarantee the loan. Groups consist of 3 to 5 clients and each client is evaluated on his or her repayment capacity. All group members receive the same loan amount as the individual with the lowest repayment capacity in the group. Based on the political and social challenges of lending in Iraq, personally identifiable information about this borrower has been altered for their protection. RI-Iraq appreciates Kiva lenders' consideration of these challenges and encourages lenders to continue their support for Iraqi borrowers.
