A loan of $850 helped to buy rice, meat, fish and other groceries.

Sixta María's story

The Balzar communal bank meets every fifteen days in the parish of San Placido in the Portoviejo Canton. This is a place known for its kind, hard-working people, most of whom work in the country.

This is where we met Sixta, 57, who is a single mother of six adult children, two of which still live at home.

To be able to provide an income to cover household expenses, she started a small restaurant in her house three years ago, and serves delicious meals. She works every day and prepares breakfast and lunch. Her children help out when the restaurant is busy, which is often because of her good cooking. She changes the menu every day which is popular among customers.

This loan is to buy rice, meat, fish and other groceries to make the meals. She has been a member of the communal bank for ten years and enjoys the benefits offered by the institution.

Her goal is to get ahead in both life and business.
