A loan of $700 helped to purchase coffee plants, re-sow, fertilize and clean his plantations.

José Luis's story

José Luis has been a farmer for more than thirty years. His main activity is the production of organic coffee. He is married to Alicia with whom he has three sons and two daughters. He works alongside his family in the fields and between them all they look after the coffee business, each one of them carrying out different jobs.

During the last harvest, José Luis produced a total of six tons of coffee, which he gave in its entirety to the “Unión Regional de Huatusco” [a Fair Trade-certified coffee cooperative] so that they could be processed and exported. For the next harvest José Luis needs to carry out some jobs on his farm such as purchasing plants, re-sowing and doing some cleaning and fertilizing jobs with organic products. If he does all this work in the space of two years he will grow a total of eight tons of coffee, which will improve his income.

In order to carry out these jobs he is requesting a loan which he will repay at the end of the harvest. Apart from producing coffee José Luis also produces sugar cane and banana leaves. He has the banana leaves sown in his coffee plantations and this helps to shade the coffee plants. José Luis tells us that he has worked with the help of loans for many years and this is how he has gradually managed to increase his wealth.
